God of lightning and thunder, Thor appears in Norse mythology holding the mighty hammer Mjöllnir, which he uses to protect Asgard, the heavenly fortress of the gods, from giants. The meaning of the amulet is clear: “It was the protective power that mattered,” says Peter Pentz, an archaeologist at the Danish National Museum.
